Background & aim: Knowledge about tooth anatomy and root canal morphology is necessary for success of endodontic treatment and present complexity of root canals during endodontic treatments and periapical surgery. The aim of this study was to evaluate the mandibular canine roots and canals symmetry and related factors in CBCT images of Iranian patients.
Materials and Methods: This descriptive study was performed on 200 CBCT scans of the Mandible of patients with sound bilateral mandibular canines . The files with acceptable quality and contain bilateral mandibular canines with mature and normal apexes and without internal and external resorption and filling of roots and crowns were chosen. Then, they are evaluated through three plans of coronal, sagittal and axial due to symmetry of canal and root numbers and morphology, foramen and orifice numbers and also related factors as age and sex. Data was analyzed using K square test.
Results : Symmetry of roots and canals was present in 176 samples (88%) and not appeared in 12%. 17 samples (70.8%) without root symmetry and 93 ones (53.8%) with root symmetry were female. (p<0.09) symmetry of roots was not significantly correlated with age. (p<0.9). The evaluated canines had single canal for 87% and two canals for 13% cases. 99.2% had single orifice and 0.8 cases had two orifices. The number of foramen was single for 97% and double for 3% cases and that was similar for left and right sides. (p<0.9)
Conclusion: It seems, symmetry of mandibular canine roots are notable. So, in cases with complex anatomical challenges during endodontic treatments, dentists should be approached for tooth treatment leading to another side.
