Background
Considering that there is not enough information about the prevalence and severity of taurodontism in Iranian society, and there are also different statistics from other countries. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence and severity of taurodontism and the related factors in panoramic radiographs of patients referring to three dental centers in Tehran in 2015.
Method and Material
A cross-sectional study was performed on 700 dental patients (350 men and 350 women) who were referred to 3 dental centers in a continuous manner. Panoramic radiography was performed and the presence of the taurdont tooth and its severity were determined. The role of age, sex and jaw were evaluated with an anomaly using Chi-square test.
Result
The prevalence of taurdonitism was 23.4%. This anomaly was more common in second molar teeth than in first molar (P <0.001) and it was more common in women and maxillary molars (P <0.001).
Conclusion
Most cases of taurodontism were mild, and this anomaly was more common in second molar teeth, in maxilla and in women.
