Background and Aims:Stainless steel crowns (SSCs) are the most common full-coverage restoration for extensively damaged primary molars, but their success depends on appropriate dimensional fit with the tooth. Since tooth dimensions vary across different racial populations, this study aimed to compare the crown dimensions of maxillary primary first molars with Kids Crown stainless steel crowns in Iranian children. Materials and Methods:In this descriptive cross-sectional study, 24 dental casts (48 maxillary primary first molars, comprising 26 teeth from girls and 22 teeth from boys) were examined from the orthodontic archive of the Dental School of Islamic Azad University, Tehran. Three crown dimensions—mesiodistal (MD), buccolingual (BL), and occlusogingival (OG)—and the corresponding crown dimensions (sizes 2 to 7) were measured with a digital caliper (accuracy 0.01 mm). Data were analyzed with SPSS version 22 using an independent t-test at a significance level of 0.05. Result:The mean mesiodistal dimension was 6.20 mm in girls and 6.21 mm in boys, and the buccolingual dimension was 6.58 and 6.76 mm, respectively. For the mesiodistal dimension, the best fit was with crown size 3 in girls and size 4 in boys, whereas for the buccolingual dimension the best fit in both sexes was with crown size 2. The teeth were smaller in the buccolingual dimension and larger in the mesiodistal dimension than the corresponding crowns. Conclusion:The crown dimensions of maxillary primary first molars in Iranian children do not fully match Kids Crown stainless steel crowns, and a single size cannot simultaneously cover both dimensions; this finding indicates the need to design crowns according to racial characteristics.
