The effects of periodontal treatment on pregnancy outcomes: A systematic review of clinical trial studies

Background and Aim: Most recent systematic studies have reported on the role of periodontal disease in adverse pregnancy outcomes, which has paved the way for interventional studies in recent years; However, due to the limited number of clinical trial studies, the results of these studies have not yet been collected in a systematic study; Therefore, the aim of present study was to evaluate the effects of periodontal treatment on pregnancy outcomes.
Material and Methods: This review (systematic) study was performed during the first six months of 1400 with a review of clinical trial studies on the treatment of periodontal disease during pregnancy and its effects on pregnancy, fetal and neonatal outcomes based on the PRISMA-P guideline, PubMed, Cochran, EMBASE, SciELO, Scopus, Google Scholar, Web of Science and Persian language databases (SID and IranDock) were searched without any time limit to find relevant articles.
Results: Fifteen clinical trial studies published in English were included in this study. The results showed that treatment of periodontal disease on preterm delivery (9 studies: one ineffective study and eight effective studies), pre-eclampsia (2 studies: one effective study and one ineffective study) and low birth weight (4 studies : Two effective studies and two ineffective studies) had contradictory results.
Conclusion: The results of this study suggested that treatment of periodontal diseases may reduce the adverse outcomes of pregnancy, fetus and neonatal. |
