Background and Aim:Fissure sealant is implemented as a part of the community-based oral and dental health program with the aim of reducing the caries of permanent teeth. This study was conducted with the aim of investigating the effect of fissure sealant performed in the community-based program in preventing the caries of permanent first molar teeth. Materials and Methods:This research was conducted as a historical retrospective study. The average age of the children at the time of placing the sealant was 13.1 years, and on average, 5 months had passed since the implementation of the fissure sealant program. Three years after this program, the dental condition of the children who participated in the program (127 case group) was compared with children from the same clinic who did not participate in the program (127 control group). The caries status of permanent teeth in the case and control groups were analyzed using relative risk calculation, odds ratio, and Pearson correlation coefficient (p=0.05). Result:The rate of caries in the case group was 35% and in the control group was 43%. (P < 0.08) The chance of caries in the control group was 0.84 compared to the case group and was not statistically significant. Conclusion:The pit and fissure sealant program improves children's oral health; however, for greater effectiveness, it is best to combine it with periodic follow-up, hygiene education, and fluoride therapy.
