Introduction: Medical emergencies in pediatric dental practices, due to children’s physiological sensitivities, pose significant challenges such as asthma attacks, anaphylaxis, seizures, and syncope, requiring adequate knowledge, performance, and equipment from dentists. Given the rising incidence of emergencies and the lack of comprehensive studies in Iran, this study aimed to evaluate the knowledge, performance, preparedness, and equipment of Tehran dentists in managing these conditions in 2023.
Materials and Methods: This descriptive-analytical cross-sectional study was conducted on 375 dentists (342 general dentists, 33 pediatric specialists) in Tehran using simple random sampling. The research tool was a questionnaire with five sections (demographics, knowledge, performance, preparedness, equipment), validated for content (CVI, CVR) and reliability (Cronbach’s alpha). Data were analyzed using SPSS version 26 with t-tests, correlation, and logistic regression.
Results: The mean knowledge scores were 66/4±49/1 (general) and 48/4±42/1 (specialists) out of 12, and performance scores were 42/2±30/1 (general) and 48/2±12/1 (specialists) out of 6, indicating poor proficiency (6/89% poor knowledge, 4/10% moderate). No significant differences were found between groups (p>05/0). Only 7/35% of general dentists and 3/30% of specialists had recently attended emergency training. Access to epinephrine (1/73% offices, 8/80% clinics) and oral glucose (5/86% offices, 6/88% clinics) was adequate, but oxygen (9/52% offices, 1/49% clinics), Ambu bags (7/6% offices, 3% clinics), and AEDs (5/11% offices, 14% clinics) were limited.
Conclusion: The poor knowledge and performance of Tehran dentists, coupled with limited training and critical equipment such as oxygen and Ambu bags, hinder the management of pediatric emergencies. Enhancing practical training, standardizing equipment and protocols, and utilizing educational resources like booklets and videos are essential to ensure child safety.
