Background and Aim: One of the concerns of the community for all people, as well as dental students, is awareness of the side effects of tobacco on oral cavity. Understanding the importance of knowledge` about smoking side effects and patient`s affection, this study was investigated and assessed face to face training course, distance training course, lack of training (control Group) and its effect on the awareness level of cases about side effects of tobacco use in the oral cavity.
Materials and Methods: The experimental study carried out on all dental students in 6th semester that had practical oral medicine. Their awareness level was identified on the effects of smoking in the oral cavity by asking 10 questions about the side effects of tobacco use in the oral cavity. A score was assigned to each question, students were divided into 3 group. In one of the case group 90 minute intensive course was done by using slides and in the other case group 2 compact training modules had given in order to check it out in form of non- attending training and in the control group no action was taken. After 3 weeks, the students were taken the same tests. Changing the awareness of the effects of smoking in the 3 groups were analyzed with the Kruskal-Wallis test.
Results: the three groups were similar through sex and age. (P<0.7)  The awareness difference in the first control group were 0.350.93, in the distance training course 1.150.75, and in face to face training course were 3.150.81(P< 0/001).
Conclusion: It seems, the training  increases the awareness level  and face to face educational methods (traditional) compared to distance training course (non-verbal learning or virtual learning) is preferred in regard with the awareness level on the effects of tobacco use.
